the future is here..? i think...
Every day feels like we're getting a little closer to that chrome-plated
SpongeBob episode. You know the one. "The Futureeee!"
The question I keep asking myself is... what does that actually mean for us?
Universal income? Job elimination? Breakthroughs in science and research, cures
for diseases we've been chasing for a hundred years? Maybe all of it. Maybe none
of it in the way we expect. That's the part that gets me: nobody actually knows,
and everyone's pretending they do.
It's daunting. It's also just a lot to keep up with. A new model every other
week, each one "changing everything." Fact-checking things that look completely
real. Trying to figure out what's true when the tools to fake it are improving
faster than the tools to catch it.
the internet is starting to feel fake
Here's the one that really got me. The other day I scrolled past something like
20 completely AI-generated TikTok accounts, all the same setup: some AI old lady
getting bullied in the comments about the "products" she's selling. Products that
don't exist. Sold by a person who doesn't exist. To an audience that's half bots.
It's funny. It's also kind of bleak? We've quietly built a machine that can
manufacture an entire little fake economy of feelings, and we're all just...
scrolling through it.
staying grounded in the whirlpool
This is a crazy time, and it's harder than ever to stay grounded in what actually
matters. But here's the thing: what matters hasn't changed. It's what's right in
front of you. The friends, the family, the community around you. The stuff that
was here long before any of this, and will be here long after the next model
drops.
When you're deep in technology, it's really easy to get pulled into the
whirlpool. To measure your days in releases and hot takes and things you're
already somehow behind on. I do it too.
But at the end of the day, none of the chrome-plated future replaces a real
conversation, a walk with someone you love, or a community that knows your name.
Whatever "the future" turns out to be, that's the part I'm not willing to
automate away.
The future is here..? I think. Honestly, I'm not sure. But I know where I want to
keep my feet planted while we figure it out.
